What insurers mean by liver disease
Liver disease is a broad term, and insurers do not all ask about it the same way. Many simplified issue applications ask about cirrhosis by name. Some also ask about hepatitis, liver failure or any chronic liver disease. A person with mild fatty liver may answer no on one application and yes on another, simply because of the wording.
- The diagnosis your doctor gave, such as fatty liver, hepatitis or cirrhosis
- When it was diagnosed and how it is being treated
- Complications such as fluid buildup, bleeding or confusion from liver disease
- Whether you have been listed for or had a liver transplant
- Alcohol use and any treatment for alcohol or drug use
Cirrhosis and hepatitis
Cirrhosis means lasting scarring of the liver, and many insurers treat it seriously. A cirrhosis diagnosis often rules out a level benefit plan with those insurers, and it may point to a graded or modified plan. With a graded plan, if death from natural causes happens in the first two or three years, the benefit is reduced or limited, for example to a percentage of the face amount or the premiums paid plus interest. Accidental death is usually covered in full from the start.
Hepatitis is handled in different ways. Some insurers ask about chronic hepatitis, and some ask whether it has been treated. Hepatitis C that was treated and is no longer active may be viewed differently from an ongoing infection, depending on the insurer. Have the treatment dates ready.

Alcohol questions and liver health
Many final expense applications ask about alcohol or drug abuse, or treatment for it, often within the last 2 to 5 years. These questions appear on many applications whatever your health, but they often come up alongside liver disease. Answer them honestly and as written. Insurers can check medical records, and a wrong answer can cause problems for your beneficiary later. If you completed treatment some time ago, the date may matter, so have it ready.
When health questions do not fit
If your liver condition rules out the plans that ask health questions, guaranteed issue is the fallback within the plan's eligible ages. It asks no health questions. The benefit is limited if death from natural causes happens in the first two years, often to the premiums paid plus interest, and face amounts are usually smaller with higher premiums.
On the call, a licensed Eterna agent will ask about your exact liver diagnosis, any treatment and its dates, complications, hospital stays and alcohol history. The agent compares how several insurers word their liver questions, since that wording decides a lot, and you can apply by phone if a plan fits. The quote is free, with no obligation.
