Why 85 is a turning point for coverage
Final expense plans are often available from age 50 to 85. For many insurers, 85 is the last age at which they will issue a new policy, which makes 84 and 85 a narrow window. Once a policy is issued, it does not end at a certain age. It stays in force for life as long as premiums are paid.
Each insurer sets its own issue ages, and some stop earlier than 85. So the list of plans open to an 84 year old is shorter than the list open to someone in their 70s, and it can differ a lot from one insurer to the next.
How insurers count your age
This detail surprises many families. Some insurers use your age at your last birthday. Others use your age at your nearest birthday, which means that about halfway between birthdays you may already be treated as the next age up. For someone who is 84 and a half, that can decide whether a plan is still open.
If you are close to a birthday, it is worth getting quotes before it arrives. An agent can tell you how each insurer counts age and which plans are still open on the date you apply.
If one insurer's age limit has already passed for you, another insurer's limit may not have. That is why comparing several insurers matters most at 84 and 85, when one insurer's answer is not the whole picture.

What a plan at this age can do
At 84 or 85, most coverage is sized for the funeral itself. The National Funeral Directors Association's 2023 General Price List Study put the national median cost of a funeral with viewing and burial at $8,300 and with viewing and cremation at $6,280, before any cemetery or marker costs. Face amounts offered at this age are often smaller and premiums are higher, so many people choose a policy that covers part or all of a simple service.
Health still decides the plan type. If you qualify on the health questions, a level benefit plan usually pays the full benefit from the first day. A graded benefit plan may be offered for some health histories, with a reduced benefit for death from natural causes in the first two or three years. Accidental death is usually covered in full from the start.
Making the call with or for an 84 year old
Have the person being insured on the call with their date of birth, a list of medications and any recent hospital dates. They need to agree to the policy and answer the health questions themselves. The agent checks which insurers still issue coverage at that exact age, compares the plans side by side and can take the application by phone on the same call. You are free to say no, and the quote costs nothing.
